The allure of ‘80s pop stars helped this cabaret star realize something about himself.

For comedian Ike Avelli, who’s cabaret variety show I’ve Slept My Way to the Top… Twice takes over The Duplex this Saturday, it was a cadre of ‘80s pop stars that helped him realize he was different from the other boys.
“I was 15 years old back in 1982, and all the boys in school were rocking to Bruce Springsteen or John Cougar Mellencamp. Meanwhile, I wanted to wear leg warmers and a headband while I sang 'Physical' by Olivia Newton-John. I found myself attracted to the boys of Duran Duran, and to this day when I see the video for 'Hungry Like The Wolf' I have to wipe the drool from my mouth and light up a cigarette. Cyndi Lauper, Boy George and Madonna made it easier for me to dress how I wanted. I may not have come out in the early ‘80s, but I knew. I mean, I used to sleep with the Village People album under my pillow. Today I’ve matured, and Ricky Martin is under there now.”
I’ve Slept My Way To The Top… Twice at The Duplex, 61 Christopher St. (@ Seventh Ave) Mar 15 at 9:30pm; $15 (plus two drink minimum). Visit theduplex.com for more info.
