Drag Palace Lips NYC Celebrates 20 Years (Photos & Video)
Lips Drag Palace is celebrating 20 years being in business here in New York City - combining Vegas-style drag shows, good food, and lots of libations for a recipe of real, campy fun.
“We’re not surprised by the enormous success of Lips,” explains Yvonne Lame’, the visionary who co-founded NYC's only true LaCage Drag Show along with investors Michael Pacca, Paul Galluccio and Robert DeBenedictis. “Fans love the uniqueness of the Lips experience. We are more than a stage show because our performers are the waitresses too. The interaction is unparalleled, the access unequaled, and that's what makes Lips special.”
From one small restaurant in the West Village, Lips has grown into a beloved nationwide chain with four locations in Atlanta, New York, Fort Lauderdale, and San Diego. They are about to open in Chicago with their biggest venue, yet.
“We have an incredibly loyal gay clientele that fill our weekday dinner shows and Sunday Broadway Brunch,” says Lame’. “But the weekend is bachelorette central. Ladies appreciate drag queens because, like us, they love fashion and makeup and they correctly view our transformations as a tribute to their beauty.”
The Midtown East establishment celebrated the anniversary with an invite-only bash that included two drag shows, Lady Bunny at the turn-tables, passed bites, and lots of booze. Inside, it was packed with lots of familiar from the nightlife community like Cherry Jubliee and Dorothy Bishop dressed as a ravishing Hillary Clinton. Outside on the red carpet, Michael Musto bumped elbows with the likes of queens such as Sherry Vine and Peppermint (rumored to be on the next season of RuPaul's Drag Race).
Lady Bunny wrote for New Now Next, "We’ve all shared so many mad moments together all over the city. And these gals have all tolerated a smashed drunken Bunny, who used to roar into Lips and light them up with so much insanity. I hope they forgot most of it."
In addition to nightly drag shows, Lips hosts special event evenings including Dragalicious Karaoke, Glitz and Glam Saturdays and Dinner with the Divas, one of New York’s longest-running drag shows.
Bunny continued, "I don’t think we should have to wait 20 years for another party this fun! Congrats to all!"
