Ten years after closing, Taboo sings again February 7 and 8 at 54 Below (254 W 54th St, 54Below.com) as a benefit for BC/EFA. Starring Matthew Rowland as Boy George and Samuel Buttery as Leigh Bowery—both of whom are reprising their roles from the 2012 London revival—the show also features many from the original Broadway cast. Taboo’s original musical director and arranger, John McDaniel, will serve again as musical director of the event and is presenting it along with Amanda Sales.
The 92nd St Y (1395 Lexington Ave @ 92nd St, 92Y.org) continues their “Lyrics and Lyricists” series with Sweepin’ the Clouds Away: Boom, Bust and High Spirits from February 22–24. Featuring Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, Christine Andreas, Erin Dilly, Klea Blackhurst and Jason Graae, this show of songs from the Great Depression will leave your toes tapping to the likes of Gershwin, Blake and Porter.
Town Hall’s Broadway by the Year series (123 W 43rd St, TheTownHall.org) kicks off its series of quarter-century salutes on February 24 with The Broadway Musicals of 1915–1939, starring Tonya Pinkins, Beth Leavel, Carolee Carmello, Stephanie J. Block, Karen Akers, Emily Skinner, Julia Murney, Kerry O’Malley and Camille Saviola. Handsome Aaron Lazar will add testosterone!
Dory Previn, a prolific lyricist whose works include “The Theme from the Valley of the Dolls,” will be the focus of celebration by The Vineyard Theater during their annual gala at The Edison Ballroom (240 W 47th St, VineyardTheatre.org) on February 24. Performers include: Alan Cumming, Billy Porter, Zachary Quinto, Ana Gasteyer, Judy Kuhn, Kate Baldwin, Montego Glover and Veanne Cox.
